“A Tall Tale but True” is a new non-fiction children’s book, not yet published. This story is about a pair of black-winged stilts who found themselves building a nest far away from where they should have been. These birds are called stilts because of their extra long, thin legs. If that feature was not enough to make them stand out, then the fact that their legs are bright pink turns them into an almost “magical” creature – sure to win the hearts of those who read their story.
A very dry spring in the Mediterranean forced many birds out of their normal nesting areas. Flying over land, sea and cities, our two birds found their way to the coast of England. These two unusual birds caused a sensation for bird enthusiasts. National newspapers reported their arrival. It was over 27 years ago that a pair of stilts nested successfully in this country.
“A Tall Tale but True” is full of interesting facts, scientific diagrams, fun maps and strange mythological creatures that were once believed to live in wetlands. Most incredible of all is at the start of this story, no one could have predicted the ending. It is rare to follow a family unit from the birth of chicks to when they disappear into the sky at the end of the book.
